The Viral Links Meme And Link Love To BlogCatalog Readers.
Stephan Miller Tagged me with this Viral Links Meme. Like Stephan, I’m a little skeptical of this kind of meme where it’s really a lot of links thrown around with out a whole lot of value added content to drive it.
Those who know me know that I prefer memes with some qualitative substance to them, but in the spirit of “if you don’t test, you can’t know” I decided to pass this one along and see what might come to pass. I know a lot of bloggers like these kinds of memes.
The Viral Links Idea
The basic idea behind this kind of meme is that each blogger tagged will add their links to the list and post it to their blog. So if you tag 5 bloggers, and they all post the meme you’ll have five inbound links from other blogs. Then on the next round each of the five that they tag will come to 25 more links, and on the third round 125 links, and so on down the line.
Ultimately the math collapses under it’s own weight as there are fewer and fewer people who have not already participated, and of course, there is never 100% participation, but still the possibility is there to generate a number of good links back to your blog.
The goal behind this for most participants is the Technorati[1] authority that can come from so many blogs linking through to you.

And My Additions To The Viral List
I’ve decided to do something a little different here. I’m going to link to the last five people I see in my BlogCatalog widget right now. It’s a nice way to say thanks for reading my blog, and it’s a chance to showcase an excellent blogging community for my readers who aren’t members there. Finally it’s a chance to see if such a random tagging method has any legs as far as getting the tagged blogs to participate. So the last five Blog Catalog Members who read this blog are officially tagged with this meme.

- Technorati is one of the first big blog and feed aggregators [↩]
- You didn’t make it very easy to copy that list buddy. Had to remove all of the urchin tracking stuff.

Memes are supposed to be interesting ways of giving back link love. If you follow my url it’d take you to my last meme which in my own opinion wasn’t so successful cause I realised that most people who continue memes forget to ping Technorati and thus the linkbacks to come in. I think am rambling too much. Nice post.
