Mind Mapping Software - Fast, Free, Simple, Online.

13 Keys To BloggingChris Garrett posted about using mind maps for creativity, note taking and productivity and mentioned a cool new website called Bubbl.us where they offer a free, flash based, online mind mapping tool.

What's Cool About This

Chris mentioned that it was his favorite because "it is free and online". I'd venture to say that these are just the beginning of a lot of reasons to call this a favorite too. I especially like that it is intuitive to use and very flexible. But most of all I like that the maps it produces look like mind maps look in my mind.

This is a neat tool that seems to actually deliver what some others have only managed to promise so far. Creating a mind map using this site is very easy to do and is the closest to actually drawing on on paper as I've seen, especially for one that you use online.

The image in this post is a mind map that I created and saved to a .jpg image. You can click on it to see the full size image. Or you can go see the flash version of the Blogging Keys Mind Map at bubbl.us.

Nice Mind Mapping Features

here are a few of the things I appreciated while trying this mind map software.

  • You can create sibling or child nodes with a single click.
  • You can connect siblings to each other by dragging a line between them
  • You have a complete control color selector to colorize your nodes.
  • You can export your maps as images, HTML or XML.
  • You can import XML files into your Mind Maps, or create new ones from them.
  • You can share your mind maps and let others view them or even edit them.
  • You can use links in your node titles.
  • You can embed a flash driven, read only version of your mind map in your blog.

A Mind Map Thumbs Up

In all I give this tool a thumbs up. if you are using mind mapping software, or if you have, like me, been thinking about starting, you'll want to check this one out.

Do you use mind mapping software? What do you use it for? And if you try this out be sure to let me know how it stacks up against the software you currently use.

Another mind map tool...

Another tool to take a look at is CMaps http://cmap.ihmc.us/
It's not flash-based...so you have to export the maps you make...but it's a very robust app. One feature that's nice is that you can label the connections as well as the bubbles.

Interesting review. I've

Interesting review. I've never really understood mind mapping, but I think now I get it a little bit more. I can see how it would be a useful way to sort your thoughts out and make a difficult decision. It's always great when we can use technology to complement the power of the mind.

Thank you for calling my

Thank you for calling my attention to this tool. I love mind-maping tools. I never would have completed my dissertation without them. But my experience has only been with Mac tools or the cross-platform FreeMind, which is perhaps too complicated for people just starting out. The cleaner and simpler, the better, in mind. (No pun intended.)

I myself mainly use a little Mac application called Incubator. It is not the most full-featured, but it is simple and stays out of my why when I'm thinking. I'll need to try out this online application soon. Maybe it's what I need in order to talk more students into mind-mapping.

Brenda, I'm left wondering

Brenda, I'm left wondering if I just got my first comment for hire? No problem if I did, since I'll be covering article marketing here to some extent, so the link is all good to me, but it just seems a little disjointed from the conversation at hand.
