Do You eMail Comments To Your Readers? And Odd Reader Registrations.

In Little LinkALot, Andy Beard posted a paragraph toward the end of the post explaining that he had decided to turn on email notification of comments to posts on his blog.

This reverses a long standing position ha has had (that i agree with) that it would be a bad idea to email comments to readers. I'm going to stick with that original position myself.

Here's Why:
As good as I currently feel my spam resistance is, I know it's not perfect. I don't want to risk the possible outcome of a single cialis or viagara type post getting into the email boxes of my readers. Especially a new reader who has not had time to get to know me and might assume that it was evidence I would approve such a thing happening.

To be sure I believe the possibility of such an occurrence to be slight, but still the possibility is there.

On thing that is niggling at me right now is a lot of odd reader registrations. They are registering with names like "health insurance" or "cheap viagara". It's been going on for about two months now. I've deleted some of these registrations out of hand, but others, I've left in to see what the next move might be. So far none of these registrations has done anything but register.

My best guess right now is that these are automated attempts to get links published on reader / author pages on WordPress blogs that have such pages, which I don't.

One thing that concerns me though is that my SpamKarma is set up to automatically pass any comment by a registered, logged in user. I doubt it will take long before some spammer decides to try that route. I've downloaded the next layer of protection already, but haven't installed it yet, as I'm still waiting to see what the next move might be.
